Relationships and Health Education

Kids Playing

You may be aware that the government has issued new guidance about the way that we teach these subjects. Although there are no huge changes to the way that we will approach these areas, we will be undergoing a consultation of our school community to ensure that we have the best possible curriculum and one that reflects the broad values, beliefs and diversity of all stakeholders.

What is it?

  • Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Lessons will be about:

  • Families and friendships
  • Forming healthy relationships
  • Physical health and mental wellbeing
  • Exploring personal identity and emotions
  • Identifying stereotypes and prejudice
  • Reducing discrimination and bullying
  • Celebrating diversity and promoting equality
  • Learning about community and governance
  • Understanding nationality and belonging
  • Exploring cultures, traditions and religious perspectives
  • Understanding puberty (physical and mental changes)
  • Sex education (optional in year six)

Limpsfield Junior School RSHE Curriculum

Support for Parents

During the 2020/2021 academic year we undertook a consultation with parents/carers in regards to our Relationship and Health Education curriculum. This consultation was then shared with the Limpsfield Junior School Governing Body who made some adjustments to the curriculum content.

Governors and parents/carers recognised that one of the key elements of the curriculum is the vocabulary that is used by teaching staff. This vocabulary helps to frame the learning at school but can also stimulate conversations at home. To support parents/carers in these conversations, the school governors feel that it is important that we create opportunities where we can share with you the vocabulary that we intend to use. When it is safe, we will do this in school but we will also ensure that it is available on the school website alongside information about the broader RHE curriculum. If you click on the links below you will be able to access a document that gives you an overview of the vocabulary we will use in your child’s year group during this academic year.

Children and families all bring to school different personal experiences. The teaching of Relationship and Health Education often provides a platform for children to discuss these experiences. Our teachers are very skilled at enabling children to discuss these experiences in a sensitive and age-appropriate way. We also have a highly skilled pastoral team who can work with parents/carers to support children who may want to discuss some more challenging experiences that they have had.

If you would like to discuss any elements of our RHE curriculum then please do not hesitate to contact us on: or Telephone- 01142430925 (please ask to speak to Mr Moss or Miss Hunt)
