Relationships, Sex and Health Education

Kids Playing

You may be aware that the government has issued new guidance about the way that we teach these subjects. Although there are no huge changes to the way that we will approach these areas, we will be undergoing a consultation of our school community to ensure that we have the best possible curriculum and one that reflects the broad values, beliefs and diversity of all stakeholders.

What is it?

  • Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Lessons will be about:

  • Families and friendships
  • Forming healthy relationships
  • Physical health and mental wellbeing
  • Exploring personal identity and emotions
  • Identifying stereotypes and prejudice
  • Reducing discrimination and bullying
  • Celebrating diversity and promoting equality
  • Learning about community and governance
  • Understanding nationality and belonging
  • Exploring cultures, traditions and religious perspectives
  • Understanding puberty (physical and mental changes)
  • Sex education (optional in year six)

What our consultation will look like

Create draft curriculum, based heavily on lessons taught in the past

  1. Continue to teach these subjects, as we have done in previous years
  2. Share draft overview with school community (where we are now)
  3. Parents complete survey and share views
  4. Hold online focus groups to discuss specific aspects raised during survey
  5. Share outcomes of consultation and changes to curriculum with governors
  6. Finalise curriculum, with changes and additions made during consultations
  7. Share final curriculum outline with school community
  8. Ongoing improvement of curriculum

What we would like from you

  1. Please look over the overview document (attached separately), which shows the range of topics being explored across our school
  2. Complete the survey HERE sharing your comments and views
  3. Let us know if you’d like to be part of any focus groups to discuss ideas in more detail (using the survey)
  4. Contact Lauren Hunt (subject lead) or Martin Moss (Headteacher) at if you have any further questions
